Finding the Old House
When I was a child, I grew up in a very old, old house. It also was a very big house. It was built after the Civil War or as we say, The War Between the States. A Victorian post-war antebellum home in the Deep South gave ample room for my youthful curious mind to imagine and play. You have to visit it with your mind's eye. Imagine big extended porches with a porch swing, 12 foot ceilings with fans, carved, thick wood doors that recessed in the wall made to be pulled out to divide the living area from the dining area. a heavy wooden staircase with a newel post so large and grand it could have been a small person that introduced the spreading staircase to the lower floor like a bride's gown flowing downward. For the doorbell, a wind up knob that one would twist as it clanged the large bell on the inside of the door. Elongated windows that when opened up, the tied on lead weights in the frame would assist the movement.
