Ahhhhh, The Anonymous Dislike Vote....

Published September 7th, 2011

I'm sure most of you have gotten them. I'm sure most of you also initially felt the same way I felt. What the hell? Really, what gives? You're going to give one of my photos a dislike but not give any critque? How about at least a snide remark so I can view your impressive body of work. I want to see what gives you such a sense of superiority. What compells you to go around knocking down ratings at will.

That initial feeling for me generally subsided into something like "You poor little troll living in your wet blanket of insecurity. I considered loathing you but now pitty you." That however, isn't much better. Go ahead and Dislike at will. I'm not here to make a name for myself. I'm not here to sell photos. I'm here to view the work of photographers that I can say without trepidation are far better than me. I will look in awe and appreciation. I will learn through observation. I will appreciate the knowledge based critiques I may get from those I admire. I will not, ever, give a vote of Dislike without offering an opinion. In the end, that's all a Dislike amounts to anyway. Which is why I now look at them as such. Photography is art. Art is subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or different strokes for different folks if you like that better.

So don't sweat the small stuff (my last cliche', I promise). If you like your photos, that's a start. If someone else doesn't, oh well. It's just not their cup of tea. Ooops!

Apart from general nasty trolls, its a fairly well used tactic on most photo sites by certain members that allows their images to be kept front and centre in the popular section. They'll dislike others work to move them down the list and have a group of friends like their own images amongst themselves. This will never go away and we'll never know for sure who is doing it. One would hope common decency will eventually prevail or the editors cotton on and blacklist members that dislike too much without comment, but if not, its not gonna ruin my experience.

I am with you in that I am not here to make money or a name, rather just post pics I like and hope someone else finds them attractive, if not, whatever!

I think if someone really does find my work bad enough to hit the dislike button then surely they can find the time to say why? If not just move on to another image.
I appreciate critique, good and bad, thats how I can figure out as a hobbyist where I'm going wrong and how I can improve.
