Biography

David is a full-time geologist and lunchtime photographer with a passion for many photo genres including: street; landscape; macro; and architecture.

Perhaps because of his broad range of photo interests, or perhaps because of a fear of commitment, his photographic style is difficult to pin down.

He is not particularly interested in gear, despite owning too much of it. His favourite camera is a tiny pocket travel zoom adapted to shoot RAW. David embraces blur and noise, providing there is no loss of meaning or aesthetic. He appreciates both colour and monochrome. In his own shooting, he is a self-confessed opportunist photographer - but nevertheless appreciates the scripted still lives and fine art photography of others. Until recently he has not been a fan of film photography (for his own use) - this stems from many decades of unbridled frustration with the medium. He has now come full circle with some learnings and is experimenting with medium format and film.

His main objective with photography is to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary by abstraction of key elements using the lens. If there were only four words to express his appreciation of the photographic works of others and those pieces he aspires to produce himself, they might be: wit; magic; ambiance; and enigma.
