Visa Obtained

Published July 16th, 2011

Uzbek embassy had told me that they would call when my visa was ready. And my understanding was that they would send it COD to my house. Got word on Monday the 11th that my Telex number had came through. I expected a call (or a COD) within the next couple days. On the 14th, having heard nothing, I called the embassy. The visa was ready. I wonder how long it would have sat if I hadn't called.

Made a run in to Tokyo on Friday the 15th to pick it up. Changed money (¥->US$) before leaving. Didn't want to drag out the visa process as I found out that I would have to mail payment (cash) to them, then wait for them to send the passport back to me. Too much room for error. Long story short, I got the visa. Side note: some knucklehead put the wrong entrance date on his application, so that created a bit of confusion. It got fixed, though. Uzbeki guy that fixed it for me seemed like a nice guy.

After picking up the Gitzo, headed to Alfie's house for dinner. Had dinner with the family and then we took a small walk around the neighborhood. Plenty hot, so it helps to get out of the house.

While walking, I got three messages. One from Hokkaido, one from Nagoya and one from Hiroo. Apparently a good-sized quake had hit Utsunomiya. Luckily, I was in Shinagawa with Alfie. We were so busy walking and talking that we hadn't noticed anything at all. It was a Magnitude 5.5 coming from neighboring Ibaraki.

After that, I headed home. Figured the earthquake might cause train issues, so wanted to get headed back. Trains were pretty packed. There wasn't any drama until a couple stops before home when a guy came lurching through the train car holding both hands to his mouth. When he got to the door next to me, he let go and projectile vomit went everywhere. Luckily, I didn't get any on me. My Gin-Ichi bag got a few chunks on it. Two guys sitting across from me were less fortunate. They got chunks on their legs. Rather unseemly mess.

Heckuva day.
