Living the dream is waking up in a hill-tribe at 5 am to have a cold shower then lead aerobics. Living the dream is seeing palm-trees out my office window. It’s having been around the world by the age of 20. Living the dream is riding horses with a great friend in the Canadian Rockies. It’s getting the cure for itchy feet. Or talking in depth with someone who will and is changing the world, and learning how they are doing it. Living the dream is eating Thai food on a beach. It’s bathing elephants, or climbing a mountain at minus 40c on new-years, with fireworks. It’s driving across Canada three times in a van. It’s about flying in a 7 seater bush plane in the Northwest Territories. Meeting and spending time with people who need it most. Painting the fingernails of a disabled woman. Playing volleyball with deaf children. Breaking onto a helicopter pad. Living the dream is growing up in a small town in the Rockies. Everyday, and everywhere, moments pass us by. These moments can never be retrieved, never be remade, and never be entirely revisited.

…but they can be captured.

This is why I take photos.

In the last two years, I estimate I have taken something in the range 250 000 photographs. Though I may have only published 5 000 of these, and a little over 200 hundred have had views higher then ten, I still have spent those two years, with my eyes wide open, looking, searching, and capturing these little moments that race past endlessly.

I used to say ‘We only have the smallest fraction of a second’, it was a tagline for my photographs. I still believe in this as it stands true for what I do. My average photograph is taken on 1/200th of a second, everything from a student singing in a choir, to a model brushing the hair out of her face, to a protester waving a red flag, I strive to capture expression, emotion, colour, and environment among others, and I only have 1/200th of a second to do all o ...
