London based film maker and photographer. I set up this site is for my ongoing London collection, but I have since expanded it include other collections. I have a small studio-gallery space in East London (Haggerston E2), Studio 75. http://www.studio75.org.uk/ I currently use digital cameras Sony Alpha A65 and A330, and occasionally a little Nikon Coolpix when I want to hide. I don't use filters nor Photoshop, beyond sizing and occasionally cropping. I also "still" use old Minolta Dynax & a Canon A1 for C-41 and E6 photography ( I scan the slides using Silverfast software which is very good at giving true colour.) When pure perfect colour is my aim, I use slide film and scan it. My 'style' is documentary, showing things as they are - not as I'd like them to be. I'm interested in places. I'm always striving for a balance between subject (which is exteremly important for me) and composition. The photo has to say something, though it does not have to be obvious (but it could be!). Please see http://tarkovskysriver.com/ for Tarkovsky's River, a photo and video project.

Laundromat

Published October 18th, 2012

Following on from a resolution to take a camera with me everywhere, I found myself in the local laundromat.

I'm using this Pentax Q which is so small I have not excuse t not always have it, and it has a lot of complexity and versatility so it's challenging.

The King's Land is a site specific urban mural installation by Nazir Tanbouli, taking over a whole semi-derelict housing estate in East London.

My job is to document the project over 3 month with still photos and film.

Turning a DLSR into a Holga

Published January 29th, 2012

I picked up a set of Holga lenses the other day, with a DSLR fitting. The Holga is a cheap plastic toy camera made in China that dates back to the 1980s. The cameras never gave very good quality photos, but with a bit of imaginaiton they could give interesting ones!

These days I have DSLR cameras and although I do still use film, I save film, with its expense, mainly for 35mm slide photography when I want that certain super perfect colour stauration only 100 ASA slides give (and then i scan them using Silverfast).

But it is fun to play with cheap cameras. SO I was happy to fnd Holga plastic lenses made to fit a SoNy Alpha DSLR mount. Sony is my camera of choice and has been since my first ever video camera. I have used Nikons and Canons (still love the pics taken by my Canon EOS 500 that got stolen) and I do use a Canon A1 for slides, but for DSLR I choose Sony.

I got the Holga set and went out the toher day to play. It was a fairly sunny day; the Holga lenses don't do well in low ligh ...

the City again

Published November 20th, 2011

I've been doing a weekly photography session on the City of London and its environs. I live nearby but although i pass through this famous and often bizarre financial district almost daily, stopping to photograph it isn't something I have done much of. With the City so much in the news due to the ongoing financial crisis this seemed like a good time to take a fresh look at the place. There is a lot of stunning beauty here, but it really is a cold, hard place exemplified by all the stone and glass, and the hard expressions on people's faces (people shots coming!) and the way they dress.
