Forbidden Details

Published July 12th, 2012

In June, I signed up to take my mum on a guided tour of Beijing with Hongthai Travel. I had never been to Beijing, but it has always fascinated me from an early age. I wasn't prepared for the dry heat, the masses of tourists, or the vastness of the place; curiosity kept me going.

Metalwork on the doors

My eyes scanned all around me as we took the tour and I often strayed from the pack. I'm glad I took my time to take a closer look.

Doors Wide Open

I wanted to shoot this at a more standard focal length, but the sheer number of tourists wouldn't allow. Chinese tourists are pushy and very curious.

Cabinet Carvings

In a dark corner of one of the emperor's chambers there was a beautifully carved cabinet guarded by a uniformed official; it caught my curiosity just before I left the room.

Intricacies in Every Corner

Many of the relics once held within the Forbidden City were carted off to other parts of the world over the years, but even the walls, ceilings, doorways, and corners of each room were marvelous.

Vandals

Many historic sites in China are often vandalized or graffiti-ed by tourists. It's a sad sight but it makes for interesting photos.

Open Doors

You're meant to look at a lot of different things when you're in a tourist destination, but I learned this time that much of what intrigues me lies in the overlooked details of everyday things.

Chalice

Gold, gold, gold everywhere.

Gold Lions

This is one of a pair of incense burners. I loved how they're both identical in their cheeky tongue-out expression.
