Rest to your restless soul

Published March 27th, 2012

All these past week, a battle has been raging inside me.

I'm forever in a dilemma. I find myself on the brink of happiness then again I feel sadness pulling me deep into its abyss.

I was like this, last week, when I had gone out of town to attend a week long training.

And on the third day, we had a chance to visit Lumbini, the birth place of Buddha. I had been there once and in my last visit, I had been enchanted by the serenity of the place.

But this time, my personal turmoil was so big, for once I was not excited by the prospect of a tour.

I had forgotten how strong the history of a place can be, how much its aura can captivate you.

Take a walk...enjoy the shimmering lake at evening

This was the scene I took in my partaking actually. But the evening was so glorious, and the flower in front made it so much more interesting, I always look back at my trip from this point and reverse run it.

Travelling in a dusty road at dusk

The first picture here is half an hour later from this shot here. As i watched the jeep come speeding along the lake shore, with dusts trailing behind it and lit by the evening light, I could almost feel my feet leap up with glee.

I knew the turmoil inside me was quieting down as the serenity around me was making me love everything once again.

Lost myself...discovered myself

And there was a bench...inviting me to sit down, contemplate. I had lost myself within me.

A bench here was a reminder to sit things out, look out at the vast lakes in either side of you, and slowly discover yourself again.

When you look up at the sky all you see is mass of color not stars

and these prayer flags..each of whose color depicts an essential element of life...spread all throughout the place. They are tied everywhere and keep dancing with the cool wind that rises from the lakes.

For once I was grateful to look up and not find infinite blue above me. My horizon was brought down to my level by these swirling masses of basic colors. Easy to loose yourself...easy to discover yourself. Easy to pretend to be safe.

While you are at it, build a fairy tale world of your own

I did that...I saw this little cottage among the willows in the distant shore of the lake that flanks the Mayadevi temple and so I let myself be run over by childhood fairy tale ginger bread houses.

I was at peace. And so, not even this childish gimmick made me chide myself for foolishness.

I stopped to admire the view, I stopped to capture the moment. I stood there and let time from 2500 years back roll me by.

I let my restless soul rest a while in the banks of these two beautiful lakes that made the prayer flags dance. That made the surrounding so serene.

Sit a while and meditate once in the name of eternal Peace

The white structure further up is the Mayadevi Temple where Lord Buddha was born some 2500 years ago. We can also see the ruins of a monastery that was built some 2000 years ago as a memory of this place. the old temple no longer stands and its ruins are still preserved inside this current temple.

I was soothed by the chantings and humming of so many meditating groups, by the incense that they lit, and by the humble expressions that each wore which clearly showed they were as awed by the aura and history of place as I was.

For we were all paying homage to a man known to have found Nirvana..eternal salvation. Who had spread the message of peace to mankind. A man who was at one with his 'self'.

And so Lumbini strangely cured me of my self obsessed turmoil.

I was a free peaceful human as long as I was there. My soul was rested.

Do visit it once if you are seeking peace. It may not be eternal, but at least for a while u attain it.
