Roughed Up - Sad Story of a Bird

Published September 15th, 2012

The other day, while photographing the horde of sparrows and finches eating the seed and suet in my feeders, I heard an odd flutter to my right. When I looked over, a beautiful Grackle was quietly sitting there. Now anyone who knows Grackles knows they aren't generally silent, nor do they simply sit. They tend to be rather feisty birds.

.: Something's Off :.

It appeared a little odd, although at first it didn't hit me as to what the difference was. I then noticed it had a bit of a curl to one of its talons.

.: A Limp :.

It wasn't till the bird started walking, or rather limping, towards my suet feeder that I realized it had been hurt. On closer inspection I noticed the small tear in its wings.

.: In Need of Healing :.

The bird had obviously been roughed up badly. A sprained or possibly broken foot, a roughed up wing and scratchy feathers on its head, and what looked like a little bit of red in its eye.

.: Attacked? :.

This poor Grackle, barely able to fly and hardly able to walk, had been through something rough. A fight? A hawk?

.: Hyper Alert :.

The Grackle knew I was watching, however it was even more alert of the sky. It didn't seem afraid of my camera, however it wouldn't let me near enough to offer it any help. Whoever its attacker was, it must seemingly happened recently.

.: Rest :.

I watched, from a distance, as the bird rested. It eventually tried to fly off, very small distances at a time. The overbearing flap of its wings and stunted flight spoke to the effort it took the poor Grackle to move. I can't say whether he survived or not. Here's to hoping the suet and seeds gave him what he needed to live another day.
