Lawrence Standifer Stevens shoots what he loves — the world around him. Whether it's architecture, landscapes, panoramas, or people, Lawrence searches for beauty in all his subjects.

Although he's been a photographer for almost 40 years, his career has taken him on a number of paths but it's always been about communications. From radio to multimedia to graphic design to web design, Lawrence has been communicating his or his clients' "messages" for over 40 years.

Recently, his "focus" has been on photography and creating beautiful, unusual images, and telling a story. Whether in the canyons of Dallas's skyscrapers down on Main and Griffin or the canyons of West Texas down on the Rio Grande, finding the right angle, the right light, and the right subject are always the key to telling a tale.

The "New" Me

Published October 31st, 2011

My dear friends, Ira and Nancy, thought my previous avatar was a bit — hmmmm.... dour, shall we say. Actually, they said I looked sad. So I thought I'd have a bit of fun and go totally the other way. For a bit, at least, until I can arrange for a new headshot. My friend, Candice, also mentioned the previous photo and said I looked like a serial killer because of my buzz cut. I decided to combine these concepts, rolled them up in a big wad and came up with a clown under the Big Top. (Think about it. No, really. Deeply.)

Okay, so I'm sick. But I like to have fun, too. And the old photo just didn't say I'm a "fungi." Sorry. That's kind of a moldy oldy. But at least I don't look sad anymore. Maybe I should do a series of avatars to express different moods. I could put them all in a circle and choose the one that shows how I'm feeling. It'd be kind of a. . . Mood Ring.

As you were.

Looking in the Archives

Published June 11th, 2011

Occasionally, I'll open up a folder of images shot several months or, even, some years back just to see them with new eyes. Perhaps like you, I will do my original edit with only the current job in mind. Seeing all these old photos is a bit like going through the reams of negatives from years back. Once in a while, I'll find a little nugget that went undiscovered the first go-round.

But it also gives me an opportunity to see two things: 1) how much I've improved as a photographer, and b) how much the quality of my gear has improved, meaning the quality of gear in general.

Because all of us hope to improve with age and experience, I'll focus on the second item: the quality of gear. Years ago, it was a major expense to buy high-quality glass. A pro-level lens could easily set one back several hundred dollars. (I'm talking about the 70s and 80s, basically the paleolithic era for you new shooters.)

Now, top lenses are not quite as expensive, I believe. Unless you get into the super-fas ...
