Mike began his photography career in 1998. Lifelong passions for travel, nature, and creative expression developed into a lifestyle and career in photography and writing. Mike photographs landscapes, wildlife, flora, fungi, patterns – anything and everything nature. He uses his knowledge as a naturalist to find subjects and themes that people rarely see, then uses photography to share his experiences with others. Mike strives to show people the beauty and wonder of the natural world, so that people feel a kinship with nature.
His nature photography studio is wherever he finds himself with a camera and Nature’s largess.
Mike also photographs kids’ portraits, from newborns through adolescence. His child photography style tends toward the candid, and mostly with natural light. His pictures highlight family interaction, the activities which fill kids’ lives, new interests and new things they can do at their current stage of development, and their developing personalities.
In both Mike’s nature and children photography, his love of life comes through, as his pictures share beauty and joy. For Mike, real life is beautiful just the way it is, and his photography emphasizes authentic moments over set up situations and scenes. He loves catching perfect moments and priceless expressions, loves making pictures of peak events, and equally loves showing the charm and the meaning in everyday life.
Mike treats photography as a life-affirming art for depicting deeper truths. He strives to make his pictures speak – strives to make them communicate not only as recordings of what things look like, but also as impressions of how things feel and expressions of what they mean.
