Back in the Day

Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking … Here goes.

I became involved with photography in the 70’s . As most people do when they start out I took photos of everything. Then I had the good fortune to move to New York City, which in itself was an adventure, set up my darkroom in the kitchen and set out to find my “vision”. I gravitated toward the lower E. Side of NY. It was a world unto itself. Kids playing in mud puddles in the gutter, in old abandoned buildings. Adults staring off into space wondering where their next meal was coming from BUT in the middle of the squalor there was a community. You could feel it in the air Families sitting on stoops. Ice cup vendors plying their cups of ice, the wonderful smells of different cultures thrown together. People making the best of a bad situation. I had found my place, for want of a better word, I had to record these special moments, not so much for myself but to hopefully show the outside world that no matter how bad you think you have ...
