Camera Bags are just Purses

Published August 14th, 2011

Understanding this fact has really improved my life and it can improve yours as well.

I came to this bit of knowledge quite by accident.

It was a cloudy rainy day and I was sitting on the porch with my wife.
It went something like this:

me: "You know, I really should sell some of my camera stuff I never use."

her: "Probably."
"Why do you have so many camera bags anyways?"

me: "I'm not getting rid of any camera bags!"
"Bags are like purses."

No sooner had the words left my mouth when the clouds parted, a brilliant beam of light shone upon us, and we were overcome by a feeling of peace and tranquility!

Why?
Because we UNDERSTOOD each other!

Let me explain:

If you are a owner of purses partnered with a photographer, I don't know why you are reading this but think of it this way:
You need a large purse when you need to bring a lot of stuff with you.
You need a smaller purse when you want to carry less.
You need a nicer purse for more formal situations.
You need a winter purse for when the weather is crappy.
You need a summer purse for....I don't know why, but you do.
And every purse must have the appropriate dividers and pockets to make them suitable for the job.

Camera bags are like that.

If you are a photographer partnered with the owner of purses think of it this way:
You need a large camera bag for all of your lenses, flashes, filters, etc etc when you want to carry a lot of stuff with you.
You need a smaller camera bag for maybe just a lens and filters when you want to carry less.
You need a "winter" camera bag with rain cover for when the weather is crappy.
You need a summer camera bag for....I don't know why, but I have one.
And every camera bag must have the appropriate dividers and pockets to make them suitable for the job.

Purses are like that.

If you are a photographer and the owner of purses....well, this all probably makes complete sense to you and you are probably wondering how this qualifies as any kind of revelation in the first place....

But, if you are the non-photographer partnered with said photographer/purse owner.....well, you're screwed....
Maybe you can think of bags kind of like tool boxes.
I have a lot of tool boxes...I have one for plumbing, one for electrical, one for automotive, one for woodworking, I've got large tool boxes for storage and "on site" work. I have smaller tool boxes for carrying the essentials off site....
Bags are kind of like that..but different.

So now you understand how it works. And now we have complete harmony in our house!

My wife understands my camera bags. She doesn't question why I have so many camera bags or why they cost so much. She doesn't even question the idea I might need another one!

And I understand my wife's purses.....Well, ok. I don't "really understand but I think I "get the gist of it."
But I don't really care.
.
.
.
.
The important thing is, now she understands my camera bags.

What's in your camera bag? What doesn't "belong" in this picture?

Hilarious post! My husband is partnered with the photographer, the purse owner, and the toolbox owner. Sadly for me, he still doesn't get it!

Speaking from the female side of things, I get more jazzed about a new camera bag than a new purse... haha--your point being well taken and quite hilarious. I also just wandered here via DPS, and have really enjoyed your posts. Love the stories, and your images are fabulous.

Ha ha ha!!! I've pointed this out to my husband so many times! He still doesn't get it. Maybe I'll buy him a toolbox. Thanks for the laugh.

What, no comments?
My wife thought this was hilarious.
And I made myself laugh too.... I guess that's good enough.
