A Different Kind of Handbook IV

Published December 3rd, 2013

This visual narrative changes the focus from the eyes to the hands. In a manner, perhaps the hands do not draw one as deeply into a photograph, as do the eyes. However, they are nonetheless just as compelling for their capacity to convey meaning within the captured moment.

In the following images, you will see hands at work, and at play...hands conveying friendship, and love...old hands and young hands. Let me hand the story over to you now, so you might also see hands from the photographer's perspective.

Essence Beneath the Eyes - Story III

Published December 1st, 2013

This visual narrative captures eyes and the underlying and inherent character behind those eyes, or at the least, seizes a compelling moment. There was no moment in this story, wherein I was not driven to capture what is beneath all of these eyes, an evocative essence. Perhaps, for you too, as you appreciate the visual narrative in these moments long after the evocative essence was recorded, you will be compelled to look deeply. In doing so, you will see and feel sadness, shyness, humor, agony. Compelling...yes, for it is the human condition.

This little Hmong girl could not at all manage a smile when I was taking her photo, and that was fine, considering she was hardly in a smiley mood. She lives in a rather impoverished Hmong village outside of Luang Prabang.

I also felt that she deserves to be on the cover page of this visual narrative, for every time I look at her photo, I am moved by her sense of despair. It is not that I believe we should exploit this aspect of the human condition in order to magnify the tone of our work. However, I am always driven to look as deeply into her eyes, as she did into my camera when I passed through her village.
