Who we are

We are a small company based in Toronto, Canada. We started a company with a simple premise: to help photographers get greater exposure. We are photographers in heart, so we understand the problems photographers are facing. Our values are simple — do great stuff, help others, and enjoy what we do everyday.

The mission

500px is a daily photodigest, devoted to bringing together the brightest photographers in the world. Upload photographs, vote, get reviewed, socialize with others and get promoted!

The story of 500px

The concept of “500px” first started in early 2003, and related to the image width — that, it should be limited to 500 pixels wide (don’t worry, it’s no longer the case), along with very rigid rules as to what is allowed or not. The concept caught on, and photographers were eager to send their photographs for a “Review” to a special editorial committee, comprised of other photographers like them.

Years later, we decided to focus our efforts on creating 500px v2, a place where photographers can join thousands other talents all across the globe, and get reviews by a professional and respected editorial team, which means that only best and brightest photographs will be included in a photodigest.

As it happens, Toronto is in the Top 10 Most Photographed Cities in the world, the fact that makes us very excited (and yes, we want it to be #1).
