I found the sand dunes to be the most challenging place to photograph in Death Valley. We woke up early and headed out to the Mesquite dunes in the dark for the second morning in a row. Instead of parking in the parking lot, we left our car in a turnout about a half mile up the hill. As the light appeared we noticed this time there wasn't any footprints like on the previous day. We all headed separate directions and I realized that each time I got to the top of a hill, the next peak appeared to be a better spot. Up and down the dunes can be quite a workout with a lot of camera gear. I could feel a sense of panic come over me as more and more light appeared. I was going to miss it! I was frustrated and tired and I decided that I was just going to enjoy the morning instead of look for the perfect spot.
