University of Toronto Night Shots, Before & After

Published July 4th, 2012

Please vote for the "after" shots :)

This is a shot I took around 11pm on the University of Toronto St. George campus. The building is still under construction and looks very modern. I used Lightroom 4 for some exposure correction, Topaz DeNoise 4 for noise reduction, Photoshop for perspective correction, and Silver Efex Pro 2.

I'm working hard on my post-processing techniques, so I'm looking for feedback on post processing more than capture technique, but any feedback would be really valued!

Original

Captured with a tripod, image stabilization off. Going back, I would have lowered the tripod to the ground for a more interesting perspective.

The capture has had exposure and white balance correction.

  • Canon EOS digital Rebel XSi
  • 28mm / f/6 / 1/10 sec

UofT Night Shot

Heavy use of perspective in Photoshop, which I'm new at :) I didn't like the converging verticals, but if I had lowered the tripod, I think the exaggerated convergence would make it look really awesome.

Used dynamic contrast to exaggerate the difference between the lights and the dark underexposed sections of the building. Also used the burn tool to bring down the highlights from the windows on the left in the background.

Night Shot 2 Original

A different angle of the building.

The capture has had exposure and white balance correction.

  • Canon EOS digital Rebel XSi
  • 17mm / f/5.6 / 1/15 sec

Night Shot 2 Redone

Less post-processing work than the first capture, but I adjusted the perspective for the converging verticals. Silver Efex Pro 2 was a lot of help, and i tried to exaggerate the differences in the cement tiles on the ground.

Took Tom's suggestions about "pushing it further" for selective editing and contrast.

I'm still surprised by how well the black and white limits distractions and emphasizes the building characteristics. Good call.

Thanks - really digging the black and white style for the nighttime shots.
