By now you probably know about our Awesome accounts with their stylish easy-to-build portfolios, unlimited uploads, custom domain support and more. Now you can have more than just the basics, without upgrading to Awesome; that’s where Plus comes in.
Plus still has all the fantastic features of the basic accounts but we have developed a couple of completely new things you’ll love: Sets and Statistics.
Sets
Sets allow you to group and share your photos. It has the same lovely looking layout as your profile page but now you can create a photo album from your summer holiday, a visit to the autoshow, a friend’s wedding or any other occasion you want to remember. We’ve even added the handy social media buttons and a slideshow making it super easy to share and view your Sets.
For an example of sets,
check out my trips to the Canadian International Autoshow 2012 and New York.
Statistics
Statistics give you an insight into what's happening with your photos. See the number of likes and dislikes, faves and comments over a time period you choose. Discover who are your most engaged followers and friends, as well as the photos that proved most popular. It even comes with a clever interactive graph!
It's a great way to learn what people love. With a Plus or Awesome account you can head here to see your stats:

So, that’s all the fantastic features of the basic account as well as Sets and Statistics. Oh and you’ll get unlimited uploads too!
Our Plus account is
just $19.95 a year.

But what I really don't like is when I dig in and get used to 500px suddenly all kinds of features are taken away from the free accounts to make headroom for a plus or awesome or whatever account.
That is not how you say thank you to photographers, its the photographers in the first place that make your site worthwhile. You need us as much we need you but why don't you freeze the abilities of the free accounts and build upon that to make your business model profitable instead of downsizing and scaring people away. I guess you get a lot less new accounts in (I'm not counting the mass of people who upload now anything to 500px for 20 dollar)
I think that you will shoot yourself eventually in the foot by proceeding with this, you are now just creating a relatively cheap way to put "all" your snapshots online just like Flickr, the thing that sets you apart from all the other sites is, is the number of stunning shots here, I think this will lead eventually to mediocrity.
I'm a amateur photographer who sometimes shoots a half decent picture that is worth looking at, so limiting the weekly upload won't do me much harm I can live with that, but I really loved the portfolio it was basic but it was sufficient for me but I'm going to loose that in 80 days from now.
Yours sincerely,
You will be driving users away. Not all users can afford to pay for hobby photography showcase.
I think if you are taking more than 10 great photos a day you are a amazing photographer :)
Maybe you should hand out some free-trial Plus accounts instead?
For example. I built a set. Just one, to try it out. Now I think I'll do another. But how? Where is the link on my main page that says "edit portfolios and sets" or some such thing? I find I have to go to my profile then select "Sets" then select a set before I see an "Edit" link. And since this link is in a set, I'd assume it's going to allow me to edit this one set, but instead it lets edit all sets and portfolios. In other words - hard to find and then behaves unexpectedly.
I just get the sense that this has not been really thought through very well.
We've built Organizer, which is all-in-one solution for all uploading and management. It may seem overwhelming at first, but this way you can easily see and manage all the photos — not going back and forth in small increments from one management system to another. It gives you better control and bigger picture. If in doubt, check the Organizer tour by clicking a link on the left on Organizer page.
I personally think that having multiple sets by the same name could get confusing, but if you feel you absolutely need it, you can change the path of a set and create another set with the same name. The system will be happy as long as the URLs are unique.
This is intentional. Mainly because you can drag-and-drop between Portfolio collections and Profile sets. This is easier if you have everything setup, or have lots of sets already. This is a unified system, so you can adjust and prepare your sets and move them to the portfolio when you want.
And what's the point of disliking anyway...? Or is it just to avoid a 100 pulse which would make any further vote useless ?
If you post a shit ton people get sick and doesn't bother looking at them at all. I think it's a good amount.
And although Awesome accounts do get very nice options for a personal photography portfolio/website, will that be the only difference with Plus in the future, or do you have other plans for Awesome?
For now, although I'm still very happy to support 500px with an Awesome account, it looks like this "intermediate" level complicates 500px's offering unneccessarily, and cheapens somewhat the Awesome offering.
Curious to know a bit more (if possible) about the thinking that went behind this.
The difference, is, mainly, in a personal portfolio — under that goes Google Analytics, 18 premium themes (and more to come), SEO customization, own branding, white-labeling, and more.
I use mine a lot, for example — http://iansobolev.com/ — and for every photographer who has ever been to the market of personal web-sites knows that it's the absolutely best value out there. But we also wanted to give a great value to people who love the community and want to be part of it (and already have a separate site, for example).
Forgetting about Flickr as a concurrent service is a good sign 500px is doing something right!
By the way, 500px is overall better, but I've had a bit of trouble organising photos in bulk.
Either way, thanks so much for the new plans :)
