How ratings work

Published by Evgeny Tchebotarev · July 19th 2010

Welcome newcomers! We found that some are curious about our rating system, so, since parts of our Help section are still not translated, I'd like to give you a quick overview of our system.

First of all, 500px is about your portfolio, so if you don't want to socialize, follow people, see their awesome new works, chat with them, or discover new photos — that's okay. Then you should simply ignore the number on the right side of your photo, and keep on building your portfolio.

For others, rating gives ability to showcase their photos in — and beyond — the community. We needed some sort of an order, and to rank photos in our Upcoming or Popular pages, so we went to the world, and returned with the most sophisticated rating system.

Ratings. Well, your "score" depends on freshness of your photo, and number of votes. Fresh photos get a higher score, and it's easier for a them to reach Popular (you need around 8-9 positive votes). Once it goes from Fresh to Upcoming (those are fresh photos with rating of 30 or higher), it gains more views. And once it goes from Upcoming and also appears in Popular (rating of 70 or higher), it gains thousands more eyeballs.

Older photos will lose rating, and each consecutive vote will add less and less to a total score. For example, first vote will bring 27 points, but 100's vote will bring 0.1 point.

For practical purposes that means that our Popular page will always consist of fresh photos, and older ones will always have to step down, once they had their "moment of glory".

So, if you uploaded a fresh photo — make sure you share it on Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon or Google Buzz — your photo (and devoted followers) will thank you.

I can accept the dislike button, but a dislike should be visible within the activity so one can see who dislikes one... that would make the abuse definitely less.

I agree about the negative button, my pic hit 95.5 and was climbing then in the space of 25 mins it was at 83.3

The "DISLIKE" button absolutely needs to be removed as it appears that many are using it just to bring other people's pictures' ratings down. It is unfair and manipulative. I've heard many people complaining about the "DISLIKE" button and some are even not willing to upload pictures anymore. If the "DISLIKE" button will not be removed, I will also have to
stop uploading pictures on 500px sooner or later. Only positive ratings or no ratings are fair. Negative votes destroy the purpose of the whole thing as I am quite sure that 99% of the time it is used just to bring someone's ratings down
and not because the picture is really disliked.

I have an 83.8 rated photo that is less than 24 hours old and I don't see it in UPCOMING or in POPULAR. I'm confused.

Have a question. My photo has 2 votes, but raiting is 0.0. Do you know why?

I'm a bit surprised I don't see any "share" buttons making it easier to inform our facebook friends.

This is really useful. Wondering if there could be a 'welcome to 500px' page when you first create an account that explains stuff like this? (Or did I miss it).

Thanks for these explanations!

I didn't find one of my photos that as a 63 score in Upcoming (the threshold is now 60):

Maybe you should add this info ("Upcoming" / "Popular") on the photo page, like for "Editor's Choice".

Other question: Is there a reason why photos are not sorted by score in Upcoming whereas they are in Popular? I suppose it is intended to let all Upcoming photos getting attention, not just the "first" ones...

I also saw some photos both in Upcoming and Popular, I suppose there is a cache causing this. It's not really an issue, I'm just a geek trying to understand... ;-)
