Today Louis Daguerre would have celebrated his 226th Birthday! Daguerre is the forefather of the moving pictures and inventor of the daguerreotype process in photography. Daguerreotypes were the first practice of photographs, capturing images on copper & silver plated plates. Soon this technique became popular for family portraits. To get just one photo the subjects had to stand still for as long as 7-15 minutes, hence creating a haunting look in their eyes and face.
As daguerrotypes required mercury (highly poisonous!) in order to develop the plates, the closest you can come to replicating this process now is with wet plate photography. Where a wet plate is coated with various chemicals and exposed to create a photograph. Please enjoy some of our favourite 500px photos reminiscent of the Daguerre’s technique and 18th century feel.
