Publicado por Diana Tula · January 16th 2014

Hey everyone!

Here at 500px we like to keep things fresh and promote our awesome members as best we can. A perfect embodiment of this is something I’d like to announce today: the 500px Cover Photo Challenge.

Every month we will hold a photo contest and announce the theme. Participants can enter by uploading their photos with the designated hashtag to 500px. The winning photo will be featured as our official Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts’ cover photo for the entire month!

To kick things off, the first theme for February is… (you guessed it!) Love. Tag your photo with #500pxCoverLove to be considered. You have until January 31 to submit.

Meet AK

Hi everyone :) My name is Alexandra Kim and I’m on the PR and Marketing teams at 500px. Part of my job is to post on all our social media channels. I love this part of my job because I help expose people to the beautiful photography of our community and help 500pxers gain a little exposure at the same time.

Good luck with the contest! Can’t wait to see all your amazing entries.

Photo Tutorial — Glassware Still Life

Publicado por Diana Tula · January 15th 2014

In our efforts to make photography education transparent, fun, and interesting we want to share with you behind the scenes details and tips on creating world's best photos. Let’s learn more about photography and grow your photo library of tutorials with this 3-step process behind still life glassware photographs. Our instructor today is Mazin Alrasheed Alzain and after his class you’ll be able to recreate your own version of this photograph:

Hi, everyone! My name is Mazin Alrasheed Alzain and I'm a 24 years old Sudanese computer science graduate. I started in photography 2 years ago, and I have been living the most colorful days of my life ever since :)

I would like to share with you this easy process that I used to create both “glass” (image above) and “The Mix” photographs. You will be able to take the same photos, just follow the steps below and enjoy.

You will need

Preparing for these photos was very easy. All I needed was:

- A TV screen (or a computer screen)
- Empty glassware: bottles, cups, glass
- White board
- My cameras with charged battery and a memory card

I used the TV screen as a background and the only source of lighting. Placing the glassware in front of the screen onto the table covered with a white board. I didn’t use a tripod and just hand held my camera. If you find that you can’t get your glassware in focus because the shutter is too slow try bumping up the ISO or improvise a tripod (for example, use another table, shelf or a stack of books and magazines).

Step 1: Place the bottles in front of the screen and on top of the white board.

Step 2: Then turn off all the lights, keeping the screen on as the only source of illumination.

Step 3: Start taking photos. Make sure that your glassware subjects are in focus and if you need toning or sharpening edit the pictures taken in your favourite post-processing program afterwards. There you can also change the crop and adjust the horizon line (in case it is not straight). And you are done!I hope this helps, there aren't many steps to tell but I tried to describe everything I've done. Thanks again and have fun taking photos!

What photos you get is up to you and up to your imagination. Try experimenting,  shooting high and low angles, changing up the background, or adding some water drops and oil. And maybe even some ink :) For really cool results on mixing oil and ink take a look at Dina Belenko’s Tutorial. Here are some of the other photos Mazin Alrasheed Alzain got when following the same steps as in this tutorial:

Thanks for reading! We hope you found this tutorial interesting and will put it to practice in the near future. Share your glassware photos with us in the comments below.
