Frank Hendriks took up photography while still at secondary school. At first he took pictures of all kinds of things. The subject varied from landscapes to humans (portraits of relatives) to flowers and plants, either in black and white or in colour. However, because so much of his time was taken up by his work (he has an accountancy office of his own), for years he didn’t get round to what he most loved doing, taking pictures. Taking pictures had to be limited to holidays. However, after having set aside his hobby for twenty years, he decided now was the time to return to his former passion. In the meantime he had found that his heart lay with taking pictures of landscapes and urban architecture. So during weekends he could be seen going out with his camera and crisscrossing The Netherlands, from north to south and from east to west, to capture that which struck his eye. During the years light has become a prominent feature in his work. He photographes in all kinds of wheather or takes pictures against the light because of the ever changeing effects and different atmospheres evoked. For example, the atmosphere of a landscape glaring with sunlight or threatening clouds hovering over the earth. He tries to capture nature, its overwhelmingness and grandeur or, in contrast, its delicacy and intimacy. Also in industrial areas or large cities with an imposing architecture, be it very old or modern, he is aware of a beauty really peculiar to these environments. And in some pictures the focus is on the contrast between nature and a neighbouring landscape created by man. Frank has had exhibitions, in Amsterdam and nearby Amstelveen and in Brazil projetopangaea.wordpress.com/2010/04/24/frank-hendriks/. The BBC bought some of his pictures of London for a programme about travelling. A photograph of Amsterdam (featuring the canals of course) will serve as a décor in a Disney movie. Also one of the leading Dutch newspapers (de Volkskrant) included one of his pictures on its website and yet other photographs have found their way to an electronic travelling guide about Leeds and surroundings. Frank is of the opinion that his photographs should speak for themselves and the public should define for themselves their appeal. My Images Do Not Belong To The Public Domain.
