I was born in 1968 in Madrid, where I've lived most of my life. I currently spend my time between Madrid and Calgary with my Canadian wife, Margaret. Over the years I have traveled around the world in search of wildlife in general and birds in particular. My main areas of interest are Africa and the Palearctic (roughly the area that comprises Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East), although I have made trips in South, Central and North America as well as SE Asia. I have a preference for open spaces: steppes, deserts, tundra, and high mountain areas. Many trip reports on the places I've visited can be found at my old website. Although I did some wildlife photography back in the 90's, I soon gave it up in favor of traveling light. With the advent of digital I started digiscoping (attaching a compact camera to a spotting telescope), and in 2005 I graduated to a reflex digital camera. I currently work with Canon equipment. My work has been published in the Handbook of the Birds of the World and the Handbook of the Mammals of the World, as well as several travel and wildlife tour company brochures. In 2007, together with some friends and associates I created the Emberiza Fund, a small organization with the goal of contributing to wildlife and habitat conservation. We have recently purchased land in the Pyrenean foothills in Aragón for a raptor feeding station, and maintain projects to protect steppe birds in different areas of Spain.We also work with the Uganda Birdguides Club, providing equipment to their young trainees. I am an occasional Birding Tour leader, guiding groups for Boletas Birdwatching Centre, mostly in central Spain and the Pyrenees.
