"WHO IS HE & WHAT IS HE TO ME ?"
Born in Menen/Menin (BELGIUM), on the French border. He visited colleges in Menen and Kortrijk. Finally he got a degree in TEACHING.
After his military service, he travelled during 3 years with his wife trough Europe : on bicycles (PEDAL cycles !) or hitchhiking. Visited England, Scotland, Ireland, North-Ireland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Berlin (at thàt moment still in East Germany : the wall still existed !), Yougoslavia (long time before the war), Italië, Greece, France, Spain, Portugal, and several Islands in the Mediterranean : Crete, Mallorca, Malta....
Started making/taking pictures "along the road". First camera was a 35mm AGFA OPTIMA 353 SENSOR, a range finder, 1984. A year later he bought his first reflexcamera : OLYMPUS OM2. In the end, he owned 3 OLYMPUS bodies and 5 lenses : 24mm, 50 mm, 135mm, a 35-70mm zoom and a 65-200mm zoom. In that time, he used 200 or (new, then) 400 ASA film. Taking pictures was rather...expensive.
But from 1985-86 he started....selling pictures (in fact, they wanted SLIDES, for those who remember...) for post cards and such. He also tried to sell his work via PICTURE AGENCIES ; he tried a few in Germany (ex Dusseldorf) and in London but the lack of accurate captions of his slides was a huge problem.
He should have kept track of whàt he took pictures off. An example : a church in France isn't just "any" church ; the agency should know (and for 100% sure) whére that church stands, what Saint it was named after and so on. Imagine the agency got a demand for a touristic book of Portugal. Could they sell his pictures with no captions or tags ? No, of course not. Just take a few books you have in your house and look at the last one or 2 pages : "responsability for the pictures : page 3 : Mister X, Page 7 "Diapro agency", page 8 : Mister Y, and so on. So, he owned thousands of salable photos, if only he had kept records of every picture !!
Then, for a while, in 1986-88, he wrote articles for a small, commercial but "free" magazine. The pay was ok (for that time) since he got about 50 Euros for 3 pages of text AND 25 Euro for every photo the magazine used. So, his articles always had one photo per page... That alll went very well since he could do the writing in one single evening. The only drawback : he always had to wait for his paycheck untill "they" needed him again.
After travelling, he never picked up teaching but instead started as a self-employed insurance broker (1986) and in 1990 he added "real estate agent" to his activities. Since 2000 he is "a bit retired".
Started taking DIGITAL pictures in 2005-6 with a Nikon D70, a 18-55 kitlens and a Nikon flash SB800. 2-3 Years ago, he upgraded to a Nikon D3 and bought some new lenses (ex 24-70 F2.8). Since about a year he uses a Nikond D3x.
He never uses other then Nikon (Nikkor) lensens since he believes their might be a slight color difference if you mix Nikon, Zeiss, Sigma, Tamron, etc. He is taking pictures every day of the week. Sometimes on assignment, sometimes freelancing, most of the time just for his own FUN !
Now, he is living in Bruges, Belgium, right in the touristic old town with all the great sights nearby....
