Clarification...

Published July 8th, 2012

I just want to add some clarification to my earlier post. Although I do not prefer any watermarks, copyrights or logos myself, I do understand that they are never going away completely. 9 out of 10 images seem to have some sort of identifying mark on them. Today as I was going through photos on 500px I came across one that was a perfect example of what drives me nuts and what set off my previous rant. Then I found a nice tasteful one to look at in comparison. The obnoxious one is literally absurd. I went to the actual photographer's page and every photo of his was surrounded in this ridiculousness making every photo completely un-viewable. There's nothing more to say on the subject. Don't even get me started on "frames".

Multiple Photo Posting and Watermark Rant

Published July 2nd, 2012

This is just a short rant. I enjoy perusing the 'Fresh' photo page on 500px often. There are two things that set me off and they happen often.

1- 500px is a site to post your favorite photos...your best work...shots you're proud of. It is NOT a site to upload the 3000 snapshots you just took on vacation in Boca Raton. Yes- with 'Sets' you are able to group photos into a set and not necessarily post them all on your Profile page but even these sets should be GOOD photos...not everything you own! Have some pride for crying out loud. There are currently 6 pages of 'Fresh' photos from ONE photographer and none of them are anything special. It's annoying. The funny thing is that 9 times out of 10 when I see this '500px spamming' it is from a non-paying user....of course it is. If you want to upload everything you own go to Flickr. That's why it still exists...probably the only reason. You can even create albums in Google+ but please please please keep your garbage off of this awesome site!

Trying Something New - HDR

Published February 26th, 2012

I'VE BEEN A FAN OF TREY RATCLIFF'S PHOTOGRAPHY FOR A WHILE BUT WAS REMINDED HOW GOOD HE WAS AFTER WATCHING HIM ON TWIT PHOTO LAST WEEK. I IMMEDIATELY DOWNLOADED PHOTOMATIX PRO, BOUGHT MYSELF A TRIPOD AND TESTED OUT HDR AT SHEM CREEK IN MT PLEASANT, SC. I DIDN'T SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THEM BUT I THINK THEY TURNED OUT PRETTY GOOD FOR A FIRST TRY.

Scouring the streets of downtown Savannah, Georgia

Published February 22nd, 2012

My parents retired in Savannah. Well...not really Savannah but a golf course community called The landings outside of Savannah. Just before Christmas I finally got out of the house and downtown to the real Savannah. What at first seemed like a pretty tame scene turned into a rather interesting culture full of life. I had a lot of fun and every time I turned my camera there was something else interesting begging me to snap a shot. Take a look at my collection on my site:

Ugh- where to begin?

Published August 30th, 2011

Composition- definition: the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject of a work.

This is the toughest aspect of photography for me. There are so many things to shoot. What do I include? What do I exclude? Should I do a close-up or a wide angle? 2/3 sky or 2/3 land? Ugh- of course my confusion and indecision does not stop there. Color or black and white? Should I edit? Crop? Sharpen? Brighten? Dim? Ugh- I guess this is what separates a good photographer from a great one but still...

Let's not stop there though. While we're at it, what subjects should I shoot today? Animals? Humans? If humans- young or old? Infants? Posed or off-the-cuff? Landscapes? If yes, sunrise or sunset? Mountains or the beach? How about abstract? What does that even mean? Let's find out-

Abstract: Existing in thought or as an idea but not having a physical or concrete existence

- abstract concepts such as love or beauty.

Hmmm- okay. Who knew? Jus ...

Starting a new Hobby...

Published August 24th, 2011

Some people I know will probably call this a mid-life crisis and perhaps it is. However, I have been interested in photography for a long time. I have just never had the time or commitment to pull the trigger and do it. When you reach 40 which I just did, perspective changes. Not all at once of course. It's been building for a while. Running the rat race. Trying to get ahead. Trying one career after another. Searching for my dream. Then one day I woke up and realized that I can do anything I want. I don't need to make a million dollars at something to be able to learn and get better and eventually excel at it. I actually don't have to make a dime. I just have to do it.

I am drawn to photography, especially at this stage in my life because a photograph can live forever. It can be a way to make some sort of lasting statement that no one can take away from me. It also allows me to tap into a creative side that I never knew existed. I am also a self-learner and I am self-driven. I still t ...
