In the tent camps where I worked these guys were fairly common. We called them Fire Toads or Stove Toads even though they're Boreal Toads. The nicknames rose from the fact that every year there's a couple that live around the fire pits and stoves where it's nice and warm. It's also a bonus that bugs are attracted to them as well so it's warm with yummy food!

This guy was 2010's Fire Toad. He dug a hole under one of the rocks around the firepit and moved right in! When it got too toasty he'd move over under one of the seats and enjoy a bug buffet. That's when this photo was taken, under a log bench, and the leg is the log in the background.

Fire Toads are very educational. They don't run away and as thus, have taught me things you never think of! Like how toads poo and pee. Very important questions in life! I've also fed many unwanted bugs to Stove Toads and find the process of how they recognize an insect vs your wiggling finger as very interesting!
