The Watchtower - Windmill The Hope, Dokkum, The Netherlands
This is one of those images that's been a long time coming. I had scouted the location weeks ago, determined what would work and what would not and I knew there was an image just waiting to be exposed. And after several failed attempts, I decided this was the evening it had to happen. The location itself practically forced me to do a panoramic shot. The only problem was the fact that the image would only work after sunset with the light illuminating the mill. And with exposures of up to a minute, a stitched panorama was out of the question. I also wanted to show and much detail in the clouds and the reflections as possible. So the only solution was to skip all the rules, crank up the iso to iso640 and open up the lens to f8 so I could do 5 second exposures. We often complain as landscape photographers why we still don't have low ISO like ISO 25 on DLSR's but this time I was happy to be able to use high iso's without worrying about excessive noise.
