Urk has a bit of a 'special' status in the Netherlands. Up until 1939 it was an island and due to land being reclaimed from the sea, it's now part of the Noordoostpolder. This shoot was a bit of a risk because I hadn't visited this spot before. Google earth is always a big help, but nothing beats physically scouting a location, walking around and seeing it with your own eyes. So I planed the shoot early to give me some extra time to find another location if this location failed to live up to my expectation. It's alway good to have a backup plan. Especially when your chosen location is not at your doorstep. One thing I knew for certain, the sun would set almost directly behind the lighthouse in this time of year, measured from the spot I planed to work from. After I had made certain the location would work, I had a lot of time to spare. So, it's off to the nearest bar again for some coffee. Urk is a nice place to wait for the right light. This time of year it's buzzing with activity and the harbor is packed with ships in all sizes and shapes. Just before sunset, I started exposing. Gradually working the location, changing the exposures and compositions as the light faded. I have seen better light, but all in all I'm happy with the results and had a great evening.
