Nice light! "The quality of sunlight depends on its strength and direction. Strong, direct sunlight is "hard" because it produces dark, well-defined shadows and brilliant highlights, with strong modeling of form. Sunlight is hardest on clear summer days at noon. Strong sunlight makes strong colors more brilliant, but weak colors pale. Sunlight is diffused by haze, mist, and pollution in the air. This diffused or reflected light is softer; it produces weak, soft shadows and dull highlights. Directionless, diffused sunlight is often called "flat" lighting because it produces fine detail but subdues or flattens form. Weak, directionless sunlight provides vibrant, well-saturated colors."...

I think you have captured the essence of the scene. May I suggest you simplify the composition by taking out the dark foreground and about 5% on the left.

Hi Cara, nice picture! I'm a starting photographer myself, so I'm still in learning mode myself ;-) I read a lot of literature about photography and spoke to a lot of people to get to basics right and to find out what all the technical stuff is about. Then get to know your camera and it's limitations. Try different angels and different settings. Don't be satisfied with just one shot, but take your time to experiment. The more often you go out and experiment, the more you get to know about your camera, the better your pictures will be. You can shoot beautiful pictures with every camera, so you don't need the most expensive camera. Not just yet. When you have the feeling you know everything about your camera and want to do more than the limitation of your camera, buy a new and better one. I read some articles on http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech.htm, maybe it helps you as well. For this photo, try to find something about the rule of thirds and apply it on this photo.

Like that one too, if you would have left the small strip of shore line on the lower part of the photo, one would have the impression of what is up or down... do you know what I mean, like flooding kind of. Hope that gives you some ideas:)

This is beautiful Cara! I like the natural lighting rather than colour "effects". You mentioned in your bio that you do mostly landscapes because of where you live. Take a look at the work of this photographer from the west coast of Canada (Michael Levin). He does landscapes but uses long exposures (4 minutes or more) to give his largely water based landscapes a strange, ghostly effect. Perhaps instead of trying post-processing effects, concentrate more on different ways to take the photograph in the first place using aperture and shutter speed. That's all the advice I can give, I'm afraid. I'm an amateur who's just learning himself. Nice photos! Have fun with it!! Oh, here's a link for Michael Levin's work: http://www.soundventure.com/snapshot2/snapshot/Michael_Levin.html#grid

Also, do a search of Michael Levin here on 500px and you'll see some people who've tried to duplicate his style. I'm only suggesting it as perhaps a new way for you to make use of your beautiful surroundings if you don't just want to do straight landscapes.

Thank you so much for the tips and advice Mr.Toasterbottom. I have no knowledge of how to use aperture and shutter speed :( but at least you have given me a pointer of what I need to work on :) I will check out Michael Levin. Thanks again! :)

i wouldnt adjust the colour too much as these subtle hues are nice- i would tho, crop a little to remove the pole to the left as the extension is partially cut off
