Taken last year north of Santa Cruz, Ca. The sunset was pretty dull, and the color was almost non - existent. The waves were fairly big, and they kept pounding the rocks you see in the distance here. I do not know if it is completely due to the rain, but there is a lot of water coming through the beach and into the ocean. I decided to set up low, right by the water to capture the swirls and water motion. I think this place has a lot of potential for a great shot if the sunset light is right. The water flow in the foreground creates a nice element and leads the eyes into the frame. May be I will be back for another sunset shot again...
Technicalities:
Canon 5D mark2 with 17-40 f4 L lens at 29mm; ISO 125, f14, exposed for 1/2 seconds (catching the wave splash of the rocks) Used a circular polarizer to cut the light down, with a 3 stop soft edge Hitech GND in Lee holder. In post I applied processed 1 layer for the blues in the foreground, and masked the rest. This brought out the nice silver blues in the water, and helped contrast it against the yellowish sky. BTW, shot in RAW, which is why I still have detail in the cliffs shadows on both sides. Shooting jpeg? - forget about those shadows.
