Located in the "Island in the Sky" district of the Canyonlands National Park, False Kiva is a Class II archeological site, meaning you will not find reliable directions to get there very easily, for a good reason :) The hike is not easy. The trail is treacherous, steep and unforgiving at times leading along the edge of a very steep drop of several hundred feet...but worth every step. I say this but the last few minutes getting up there was no fun especially if you set out hiking in the dark.
The giant window of the False Kiva is a stunning "room with a view" to rock formations under a celestial night sky in the Canyonlands. A hauntingly beautiful place lost in time where a silent echo of a culture that suddenly vanished!
If I ever go back, it will be on a night when the moon is out. Lighting was a challenge both inside the alcove and out in the valley.
Huge shout out to Jake Mckee (http://500px.com/Jakestir) who helped me with the re-work. Thanks so much Jake! You are AWESOME!
