Sometimes I can get complacent about the photographic opportunities on the surface of glaciers or even in their caves, but this photo represents a truly once-in-a-lifetime situation. This cavernous tunnel is actually running through the middle of an iceberg, and the iceberg is frozen in the Mendenhall Lake.

As glaciers around the world continue to retreat with alarming speed, they are becoming increasingly difficult to access. Within the next several years, the Mendenhall Glacier will pull up out of this lake. That means no more icebergs! It's a condition I can hardly imagine, but it's only a matter of time.

The image was recently reworked from scratch using the most current HDR techniques available through PS and LR.
