Maybe not my most technically amazing photo, but it serves as a fantastic reminder of this sight I'll never see again...With the final shuttle launch upon us I thought I'd look back at when I had the pleasure of photographing Discovery lift off in March 2009. The launch a little after sunset, with the sunset to my back. As Discovery lifted off in to the atmosphere it reached a height where it was lit back up by the sun, and in doing so, created a beam of shadow across the sky. A truly amazing spectacle to witness and a sight I'll never forget. You can see NASA HQ on the horizon, just to the right of the smoke trail, to give you a sense of the scale.
