Fantastic work, Paul. That's beautiful country that you get to spend time in. I briefly contacted you through Twitter back in the Spring before my wife and I made our trip to Banff and Jasper. We spent 9 days up there and had a great time. We'd definitely be up for visiting again in a heartbeat.

I would have preferred a focus on the sky instead of the foreground, but nice light and composition!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I expected that the shallow DoF would not appeal to everyone. Part of my issue with this location is that it has been shot billions of time, often at night too, and in every shot that is out there the lake is the focus. I spend a lot of time at Peyto Lake and wanted to put a different twist on the scene. I took home some hyperfocused shots that night but ended up liking this one the best. It's an attempt to only let the lake steal SOME of the show and balance the attention that the stars, the lake and the quarzite boulders are getting. Also much less time on the computer than getting into blending. :-) You guys do fabulous work and your feedback is much appreciated.

I certainly appreciate the spirit of doing something different at an oft-photographed location - I figured that's what you were after, having looked at the rest of your portfolio. Just putting my 2 cents in. :)

Really beautiful night and scene, and very nice handling of the light and color at this time of the evening - but I'm with Jordan, not feeling the out-of-focus background/sky.

Having looked at the rest of your (excellent) portfolio, I'm sure you know about the hyperfocusing or DoF blending that could get this whole scene in focus, even at f/4 without a shutter release that does >30sec exposures. So.. I'll just say I would REALLY love this image if you had used such techniques here.

I really like the idea here, but it is blurry.
