You know, I’ve decided that Yellowstone NP doesn’t do anything “small” – and that includes amazing rainbows!
As usual, I was driving around looking for wildlife (I think I was leaning towards coyotes) and noticed the sky was getting darker. I continued to drive and the weather continued roar in. I was still in the sun, but I could tell it was raining pretty good in the distance. Now, one thing I’ve learned over the years is that if you’re in the sun and you see rainclouds – GET THAT SUN BEHIND YOU – there’s bound to be a rainbow!
Sure enough as I rounded the corner up the hill I saw a fairly intense rainbow. I knew time was short the way the clouds were rolling in and about killed myself trying to find a good place to set up the gear. Sure, I could take it where I stood, but backgrounds make the photo, ya know?
I finally settled on a place to pull over and as I got out of the car and set up, I realized what had started off as a good rainbow had gone off the charts! This was easily one of the most intense rainbows I’d ever laid eyes on. It only lasted a few minutes, but that was enough to capture this shot.
