Luckily, the photography gods smiled on me and produced the same conditions two days in a row allowing me to capture this photo. There are quite a few things I love about this it. First off, it's incredibly warm. It was an overcast day and the diffused light gave everything equal weight, allowing me to extract some great colors. Now, I have to admit, the temperature of this photo was actually an accident. While the final product is what I had envisioned while I was shooting, it wasn't until I got home that I realized the camera was still white balanced for fluorescent light from my portrait photos the day before. I love the outcome, but I wouldn't have thought to capture it in that way on purpose.
The depth of field in this photo is great, too. I wanted a decent bit of the moss in focus, but I didn't want the trees in the background to have much definition at all. I tried some middle-of-the-road f-stops, but in the end f2.8 won the day.
One of the things that I think this photo does well is to capture the feeling of walking through the woods on a wet day. You can practically hear the drops of rain falling off the branches all around you as you smell the sweetness of the moss and the bark. I'm really proud of it.
