Stability and permanence in my memory. In 1808, the United States government established a set of kerosine-based lighthouses on the southeast corner of Cape Cod, MA (the elbow, if you will). In the early 1900s, a rotating light was put in place of a "twin" lighthouse system, doubling the output of the light. The lighthouse is still an actin U.S. Coast Guard station. I was blessed with a very foggy morning, and made my way to the Chatham lighthouse. There, over my head, swept the timeless beam, every few seconds as it has been since 1939. Much like the fence in my previous post, the lighthouse will at some point succumb to erosion as have its predecessors. Likewise, in the world of ubiquitous GPS, it could be argues that lighthouses aren't necessary at all. That being said, it remains a beacon of memory in the fog of time. Thank you for looking.
