We were sailing on Lake Superior around the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin.

One evening we pulled into Madeline Island for the evening.
I launched into my “Have Camera, Will Wonder” routine.

I found a gate with two red bandanas on the entrance. As I entered I had that “holy ground” feeling.
This was a cemetery for Ojibwe (Chippewa) converts to Christianity in the midst of sailing entertainment establishments & vacation homes.

Conversations from elsewhere faded away in the heavy, misty afternoon air.

I was struck by gestures of respect which I did not fully understand. There were bandanas tied to the gate and other places. You can see one in the tree in this picture.

People left coins on graves. The money was left undisturbed by later visitors.

I hope you can feel the quiet and reverence in this image.
