wow, I would have freaked. Been to Glacier NP myself and have a healthy respect for the Bears they have there...the look in this guys eyes are hard to read. Its amazing for such a large animal that they have such small eyes in comparison.

Definitely conveys a mood and strong message. I've been in that situation as well with a number of subjects over the years, and it is not a good thing!!!! I do not care to be there again! When the head goes down and the slight swaying starts it is game on...and it will typically end badly for one or both. I learned a lot about animal behavior from each encounter. Great capture under pressure, Buck! How close was this big boy? I once had a close encounter with a grizzly bear in Yellowstone that was about thirty feet away. He stopped and stared at me as I slowly reached for my video camera that I had just set in my backpack.

Well Paul ...... I was shooting with my 400mm 2.8 lens (freehand) and I was coming around a bend going up hill a little.... that would make the russian river down below me about 30 yard,........ and he was about a little more than half way between me and the river ... closest to me..... so take a guess ......... for me it doesn't matter the feet..... I was just tooooo close.
