Ok, this isn't meant to scare anyone :-)
What you're looking at is mostly the eyeball of a sandhill crane. The crane, although completely wild, is quite used to having people around - hence I was able to get close. In fact, I sat on the ground and the crane approaced ME. This image is cropped from the original.
