Harold Davis is a friend, mentor and the author of more than a dozen books on photography. One of his books, Creative Landscapes bears this tree on the cover - though the view on the book is from the opposite side of the tree.

In this shot the tree is nestled nicely in the densest part of our Milky Way just to the North of Sagittarius and to the South of Ophiuchus (try saying that without sounding like you've got a disease). I simply plopped my camera down and didn't attempt to frame this shot since I was helping the students. However after I saw the result, I did move much closer. That shot will be posted soon.

This image was taken during the "Dark of the Moon Night Photography Workshop in the Bristlecone Pines" - one of the most awesome places for night photography I know of. Even with fickle and uncooperative weather, there were many opportunities here so many if not most of the students got similar (and better) results. I used a fisheye for this show which I've defished a bit. I *loved* hearing the students shouting "OMG, OMG, OMG" as they watched their LCDs show what they had just recorded.

Here I did some light painting with a blue-white LED built in to my walkie talkie.
