He had been trembling the whole way, but his heart carried his feet, his head be damned. The moment consumed him completely; awash with adrenaline, powering on, following the trail of feathers, which seemed to sink slightly in the air and cloud around him, darting this way and that and overwhelming his vision. He had no idea what to expect, whether he was being watched, whether he was in danger, what he would find; but something propelled him ever forward, and with each step a greater feeling of intensity started to wash over him. The feathers got more rapid, his vision more obscured, until all he could see was the rush of white from the swirl and a vague but prominent light somewhere ahead, he was overwhelmed, heart pounding out of his chest, head awash with confusion. Then all at once with his last, momentous step, the feathers relented, the light broke, and all was perfectly silent and calm.
