Despite not being classed as endangered, wild lion numbers are dwindling rapidly. 40 years ago there were believed to be over 100,000 lions on the planet - today it could be as few as 20,000. Poaching and habitat destruction remain the major causes of the decline. Incredibly in certain African countries, lions can still be hunted legally.
