The image of a crashed United States Navy C-117D (modified DC-3), was shot on a remote beach just West of Vik, Iceland. I first saw the remains of the aircraft in a Sigur Ros music clip and founded out of its final resting place through some internet research. It looks like the Navy transport aircraft ran out of fuel in bad weather on 24 November 1973, almost 40 years ago! No lives were lost but apparently a wreckage salvage operation by helicopter, let to a fatal crash of the rotorcraft at the side. Even though the wings and tail of the aircraft have been removed, the main fuselage has been left in the desolate Icelandic landscape. In order to get to the spot, one needs to open (and close!) a private gate along the main ring-road and then drive a few kilometers off-road through the black sand. Having a good 4x4 proved very valuable in Iceland!
