I find Venice a city full of contradictions. It's a place of charm and beauty, yet, it seems to have sold its soul for a quick buck. Maybe it's because we were there at the peak of the tourist season or maybe it's because its streets are so narrow and claustrophobic, but it seemed completely overrun by an army of tourists. There was a quote I read in an article about Venice that really summed it up for me:

"The beauty of Venice is undoubted. But the city pays for it like a prostitute that is too beautiful"

The best thing we did though was to walk the city early in the morning before the sun came up. It seemed quiet and contemplative. The only people about were those who were just getting to work so it seemed like more of an insight into Venetian life.

Every now and then I venture back into Twitter to see if I can figure out what it is that makes it so popular. I think I'm finally starting to get it. I'm late to the party but I'm there (and this time I might just stick around for a while)! So if anyone would like to connect, I'm available at @benjeev.
