We drove from Kona over the saddle road and up to the visitor center, which is located 9300 feet up the slopes of Mauna Kea. Just before sunset, volunteers at the center placed telescopes outside and we had the opportunity to view planets and stars through them, which is really cool. For instance, do you see the stars in this shot that form an upside down triangle? The point of light in the upper right of this formation is the planet Saturn, and the one to the lower right is mars.
As the sun’s last rays vanished, and darkness took the stage, the Milky Way shone bright in all of its glory. It was an amazing night : )
