This is accomplished by the presence of Jacobson's organ (also known as Vomeronasal organ) in the palate (roof of mouth). Though this organ is found in many animals, reptiles use it the best. The forked tongue licks particles in air or surroundings, flips back inside the mouth and then the forks enter the two pits of the Jacobson's organ situated in the palate and this helps in smelling ... Therefore, in Lizards, the deeper is the fork, the stronger is the use of the organ.
