Fall colors continued to be revealed around each corner and bend in the road. Crossing several streams and a river provided some striking scenery high in the Sierra just of the main road known as Sonora Pass. We very much wanted to stay longer and find more of these little hidden jewels which are strewn throughout the Sierra Nevada but it was at last, time to head back. And so this little dirt road out in the country began to take us down our path back to the city of San Francisco.

This shot was taken last year. We are preparing to make a similar trip again this year and the trick is knowing exactly when the vast array of colors are at their peak for the areas you plan to travel. And the, trying to decide from all the stunning vistas, which ones to visit. The vast majority of color in the Sierra comes in small pockets scattered up and down the mountain range. The altitude can dictate which areas have the best color at which times of the season. A small frost or lack of any real change in temperature can cause the color to totally miss and just go straight to browns.
