While playing pool with my son I spotted this going on. There was not enough light to get a hand held shot so I rested my camera on the end of the table and set a 10 second timer by which time the player was out of shot. So, I approached him, explained what I was trying to do and asked if he would pose a shot for me. He was a friendly lad and duly obliged. Many times I have felt too shy to approach strangers for this sort of thing, but there's a voice in my head telling me not to let my shyness rob me of an opportunity.
