This beautiful little bird was well worth about an hours wait to see. We travelled quite a distance through fields to an area in the Andean Mountains t It is one of the rarest birds to find and in fact a lady we met from Panama said she had specifically come to Mindo to see this species.
It is a fairly big bird measuring 8 to 8.7 inches and is found in the Northern Andes of South America. It's coloring is lovely being mostly black with large white spots and brown on the flank and a reddish head and throat. It favors humid and rather low growing forest with canopy of 50 to 80 feet.
It eats plant material and arthropods which it digs up with both feet. It stays close to the ground and is more often heard than seen.
We were thrilled to have had the opportunity to see this shy little bird.
